# Private Label Food Packaging: How Custom-Printed Packaging Is Developed

How private label food packaging is developed: print or custom shape, minimums by product, artwork, proofs, samples, lead time and EU rules for printed text.

Key takeaways

- Private label food packaging is packaging made to a brand's own design: either a standard format printed with the brand's artwork, or a new shape or size developed for the brand.
- Printing your design on a standard cup, bowl, box or bag is the fastest route; a new shape needs new tooling, such as a mold for molded bagasse or a new die-line for a paper box, plus sampling before production.
- Minimum orders for printed packaging depend on the product and the print method and are confirmed per product in the quote; simple printed paper items usually start lower than printed cups and bowls, and molded fiber with a custom mark starts higher.
- A typical project runs from brief and artwork to a digital proof, a physical sample, production and shipping; the proof and sample approvals are where most delays happen.
- Since 27 September 2026, Directive (EU) 2024/825 restricts generic environmental claims such as 'eco-friendly' or 'biodegradable' on products sold to consumers in the EU, so check every claim you print.

Private label food packaging is packaging made to your brand’s own design: a standard cup, box, bowl or bag printed with your artwork, or a new shape or size developed for you. Most food brands start with print on a standard format, because it needs no new tooling and reaches the shelf fastest. A custom shape makes sense when the product, the portion or the brand needs something no standard format offers.

This guide explains the two routes, which products can be personalized and how, what drives the minimum order, how a project runs from brief to delivery, what to prepare for the artwork, and which EU rules apply to the text you print.

## What Is Private Label Food Packaging?

Private label packaging carries your brand instead of the manufacturer’s. The manufacturer produces to your specification and you sell or serve under your own name. In food service, that means your logo on cups, burger boxes, bags and wraps; in retail, it means your brand on pouches, trays and boxes on the shelf.

There are two routes:

- **Print on a standard format.** A cup, bowl, box, bag, sleeve or wrap from the existing range, printed with your design. No new tooling; the work is artwork, proof and print setup.
- **A new shape or size.** A format developed around your product: a new box structure, a tray with your compartments, or a molded fiber item with your shape. This needs new tooling, which differs by material: a mold for molded bagasse, a new die-line and cutting tool for a paper box.

Many brands combine both: a printed standard cup and bag with one custom box for the signature product.

## Which Packaging Can Be Personalized, and How?

| Product | Typical personalization | What it needs |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Paper cups (hot, cold, double wall, ripple) | Printed outside, one color up to full color; selected cups can have a colored inside | Artwork, proof, print setup |
| Paper bowls, soup cups and food containers | Printed outside, one color up to full color | Artwork, proof, print setup |
| Paper boxes (burger, fries, pizza, takeaway) | Printed; new sizes and structures possible | Artwork; a new structure needs a new die-line |
| Paper bags, sleeves and wraps | Printed bands, all-over patterns, logos | Artwork, proof |
| Molded bagasse (clamshells, plates, bowls, trays) | Logo or pattern embossed in the fiber; new shapes and sizes | A dedicated mold, then testing and sampling |
| Labels and sleeves on any pack | Printed band or label around a standard item | Artwork; the quickest way to brand plain stock |
| Wet wipes, sachets, stand-up pouches, ashtrays | Printed with your design | Artwork, proof, print setup |

**Print methods.** Paper cups and food containers are printed flexo or full color (CMYK), from one color to full color. The method depends on the product, the number of colors and the quantity, and it affects the minimum order.

**Embossing on bagasse.** Molded fiber is not printed in the same way as paper; the usual way to brand it is a logo or pattern formed into the fiber by a dedicated mold. A printed paper band or label around the pack is the alternative when you want color.

## What Is the Minimum Order for Private Label Packaging?

Printing and tooling have a fixed setup cost per design, so private label minimums are higher than for plain stock. They depend on the product and the method, so every product is checked separately. As a guide, simple printed paper items such as sleeves and carrier bags start from about 20,000 pieces, printed paper cups and bowls from about 50,000 pieces per design, and molded bagasse with a custom mark from about 100,000 pieces; Ekoroll confirms the exact minimum for each product in the quote.

Three things move the minimum:

- **Number of designs.** Each design or size has its own setup. One design across three cup sizes is three print setups.
- **Print method and colors.** More colors and some methods need longer runs to be economical.
- **New tooling.** A new mold or die-line is a one-time cost that is spread over the order.

For the economics behind minimum orders, see our [guide to MOQ in the packaging industry](https://ekoroll.com/en/blog/moq-in-packaging-industry).

## How Is a Private Label Packaging Project Developed?

1. **Brief.** Products, sizes, quantities per item, the food and how it is served (hot, cold, greasy, delivery), the destination country, and the target date.
2. **Format selection.** Standard formats are matched to the brief first; a new shape is proposed only where no standard fits.
3. **Artwork.** You send your files, or a logo and a brief. Ekoroll’s design team prepares the artwork and print-ready files free of charge.
4. **Digital proof.** A flat proof shows the artwork on the die-line of each item, with colors, positions and text. Nothing is printed before you approve it in writing.
5. **Sample.** Standard samples are free of charge; the courier cost is paid by the customer. For printed or new formats, a pre-production sample is approved before the full run. Test it with your own food and service time.
6. **Production.** Printed paper cups and food containers are usually produced in about three to four weeks after approval; a new mold or structure adds tooling and sampling time.
7. **Packing and shipping.** Cartons and pallet plan agreed in advance; delivery EXW İzmir, or FOB or CIF from İzmir port.

Most delays happen at steps 4 and 5: late artwork changes and samples that sit unchecked. Name one person who approves proofs and samples.

## What Should You Prepare for the Artwork?

- **Logo as a vector file** (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF with vector content), not a screenshot or a low-resolution image.
- **Brand colors** as Pantone references if you have them; screen colors (RGB) do not print the same.
- **Fonts** as outlines, or the font files.
- **All text you want printed**, checked for spelling in every language and for legal claims (see below).
- **Mandatory marks** for your market, for example the single-use plastics marking on cups that contain plastic.
- **Your rules for position:** where the logo must sit, what must stay visible when a lid or sleeve covers part of the pack.

If you do not have these, the design team works from what you have and shows you the result in the proof.

## What Drives the Price of Private Label Packaging?

We do not publish prices, because they depend on the combination below. Knowing the drivers helps you compare quotes fairly.

| Factor | Effect on cost |
| --- | --- |
| Quantity per design | Higher quantity spreads setup cost; the biggest single factor |
| Number of designs and sizes | Each design adds its own setup |
| Print method and number of colors | Full color and more colors cost more per unit at low quantities |
| Material and barrier | Board grade, coating and fiber weight change the base cost |
| New tooling | A mold or die-line is a one-time cost |
| Packing and delivery terms | EXW, FOB or CIF, pallet configuration |

Ask every supplier to quote the same specification, the same quantity per design and the same delivery terms, and to state setup and tooling costs separately.

## What Can You Print on Food Packaging in the EU?

The packaging is yours, so the text on it is your responsibility. Check four points before you approve the proof:

- **Environmental claims.** From 27 September 2026, [Directive (EU) 2024/825](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dir/2024/825/oj/eng) restricts generic environmental claims such as “eco-friendly”, “green” or “biodegradable” on products sold to consumers when the excellent environmental performance behind them cannot be demonstrated, and it bans sustainability labels that are not based on a certification scheme or set by a public authority. Specific claims, for example a named compostability standard, need evidence that covers the actual product.
- **Single-use plastics marking.** Beverage cups that are made wholly or partly of plastic, which includes paper cups with a plastic lining or coating, must carry the harmonized “plastic in product” marking defined in [Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/2151](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg_impl/2020/2151/oj/eng).
- **PPWR labeling.** The [Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation](https://ekoroll.com/en/blog/ppwr-explained) introduces harmonized labels on material composition, which become mandatory once the Commission’s implementing acts apply. Leave room for them in long-term designs.
- **Food contact.** Printing inks on food packaging must not transfer to the food; under the EU rules on good manufacturing practice, inks on the outside of food-contact packaging are applied so that substances do not set off onto the food-contact side. Ask for the declaration of compliance for the printed item.

## Examples: Private Label Sets for Restaurants

The cover of this article shows a set made for the restaurant brand Meat Factory: a printed paper coffee cup, a kraft bag with a printed band, a printed sandwich wrap, a fries sleeve and labels for spice jars, all in one visual identity. Another set, for Tikka Way, combined a printed pizza box, paper bag, burger box and burger wrap, fries box, takeaway boxes, paper cup and napkins. Both started from standard formats; the brand came from the artwork, not from new tooling.

## Private Label Checklist: What to Ask a Supplier

- Which of my items are standard formats, and which need new tooling?
- What is the minimum order per design and per size, and what does it depend on?
- Which print method will be used for each item, and how many colors?
- Are setup, plate or mold costs quoted separately?
- Who prepares the artwork, and when will I see the digital proof?
- Will I approve a physical sample before the full run?
- What is the production time after approval, and the delivery term (EXW, FOB, CIF)?
- Which documents come with the printed item: declaration of compliance for food contact, coating and certificate details?

## Frequently asked questions

### ### What is private label food packaging?

Private label food packaging carries your brand instead of the manufacturer's: your logo, colors and text on cups, boxes, bags, wraps or containers. It can be a standard product printed with your artwork or a new shape developed for you. The packaging is made to your specification and supplied under your name.

### ### What is the minimum order for custom printed food packaging?

It depends on the product and the print method. As a guide, simple printed paper items such as sleeves and carrier bags start from about 20,000 pieces, printed paper cups and bowls from about 50,000 per design, and molded bagasse with a custom mark from about 100,000. Ekoroll confirms the exact minimum for each product in the quote.

### ### How long does custom printed packaging take?

Allow time for artwork, a digital proof and a physical sample before production starts. Printed paper cups and food containers are usually produced in about three to four weeks after approval, plus shipping; a new mold or structure adds tooling and sampling time. Ekoroll gives the schedule in writing with the quote.

### ### Do I need a designer to order private label packaging?

No. You can send a finished vector file, or a logo and a brief. Ekoroll's design team prepares the artwork and the print-ready files free of charge and sends a digital proof for your approval before anything is printed.

### ### Can I print 'compostable' or 'eco-friendly' on my packaging?

Only with care. In the EU, Directive (EU) 2024/825 restricts generic environmental claims such as 'eco-friendly', 'green' or 'biodegradable' on products sold to consumers from 27 September 2026, and specific claims must be backed by evidence. A compostability claim should name the standard and the certificate that actually covers the product.

### ### Can I get a sample before ordering private label packaging?

Yes. Standard samples are free of charge; the courier cost is paid by the customer. For printed or new formats, a pre-production sample is approved before the full run is released.
