A paper cup engineered for spirits

Paper cups were invented for coffee, water and soft drinks. Spirits are a different liquid altogether. Ethanol wets surfaces far more easily than water and is absorbed by many common cup coatings, so a 40% drink slowly works its way into the coating and, above all, into the seams of the cup, where the edges of the paper meet. The result is a soft cup, a wet tray table or a stained bar counter long before the drink is finished.

That is why spirits are usually served in glass or rigid plastic cups, even where a light, unbreakable, printable paper cup would be the better choice.

The Ekoroll Alcohol Cup is a new development that changes this. It is not a standard paper cup with a new print: the barrier and the way the cup is made were developed specifically for alcohol.

How it works

  • Proprietary alcohol-resistant coating. A composite coating developed to resist ethanol is combined with a water-based coating on the inside of the cup. Conventional coatings absorb alcohol; this one is designed to hold it back.
  • Special forming process. The side seam and the bottom seam are the weak points of every paper cup. An additional forming process strengthens them against penetration.
  • Tested with real spirits. In the producing partner’s internal tests, spirits up to 40% ABV stayed in the cup for 2 hours without penetrating: long enough for a full bar shift, an event set or an in-flight drinks service. Test details are available on request.

On an aircraft every gram counts, and broken glass in a galley or at a festival is a safety problem. The Alcohol Cup gives operators a light, unbreakable cup that carries their brand on every pour.

Where Alcohol Cups are used

  • Airlines and onboard service: trolley and galley service of spirits, miniatures poured into a cup, and mixed drinks during the flight, on trains and on ferries.
  • Bars, clubs and lounges: fast service of shots and mixed drinks without glass collection.
  • Festivals, stadiums and concerts: venues where glass is not allowed and drinks are held for a long time.
  • Hotels, banqueting and catering: receptions, pool bars and outdoor events.
  • Spirits brands: tastings, launches and promotions with the brand printed on the cup.

Samples and service trials

The best test is your own service. We send samples so you can fill them with the drinks you actually serve, at your serving temperature, and check the cup over your longest service time before a full order. Test details from the producing partner are available on request.

Frequently asked questions

Why do ordinary paper cups struggle with spirits?

Alcohol behaves very differently from water or coffee. Ethanol wets surfaces far more easily and is absorbed by many common cup coatings, so high-strength drinks slowly work their way into the coating and, above all, into the seams of the cup, where the paper edges meet.

What makes the Alcohol Cup different?

Two things work together: a proprietary composite coating developed to resist ethanol, combined with a water-based coating, and a special forming process that strengthens the side and bottom seams against penetration.

How long does the cup hold spirits?

In the producing partner's internal tests, spirits up to 40% ABV stayed in the cup for 2 hours without penetrating. Ask us for the test details; we recommend a service trial with your own drinks before a full order.

Which drinks is it for?

Spirits served neat, tasting pours, mixed drinks, cocktails and spirits over ice, in aircraft, bars, events and hospitality, with an alcohol content of up to 40% ABV.

Is it suitable for hot drinks?

The Alcohol Cup is designed and tested for spirits and mixed drinks. For hot drinks, use our hot paper cups, or ask us about your specific application.

Can it be printed with our brand?

Yes. Plain and printed versions are available for airlines, bars, spirits brands and event organizers.

How should we test the cup before ordering?

Fill samples with the drinks you actually serve, at your serving temperature, place them on a paper towel and check the seams, the bottom and the towel at intervals over your longest service time. We are happy to send samples for this.

Which documents are available?

Food-contact documentation is provided according to the final specification. Tell us what your market or customer requires and we will confirm what is available for this cup.
