Sugarcane-fiber packaging for professional food service

Bagasse is the fiber left after sugarcane is processed for sugar. Instead of being discarded, it is pulped and molded under heat and pressure into rigid, lightweight food packaging. The result is a renewable, fiber-based alternative to foam and conventional plastic takeaway packaging.

From sugar mill to food packaging

Bagasse starts in the sugar mill. After sugarcane is crushed for its juice, the remaining fiber is bagasse. Sugar mills have long used part of it as fuel: burning bagasse for combined heat and power (cogeneration) supplies the mill’s own steam and electricity and often exports renewable power to the grid. Cogeneration from bagasse is an established practice in sugarcane-producing countries such as Mauritius, Réunion, India and Brazil, where it supports sustainable development, uses a domestic resource and helps the industry stay competitive while cutting emissions.

The rest of the fiber becomes packaging. It is cleaned, pulped and molded under heat and pressure into plates, bowls, clamshells and trays: a by-product of food production, turned into food packaging, with no tree pulp and no plastic.

Under the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive, expanded polystyrene (EPS) food containers and cups for immediate consumption are restricted on the EU market, and single-use plastic packaging faces growing regulatory pressure. Bagasse gives operators a fiber-based alternative that performs in hot, cold and greasy food service.

Ekoroll bagasse products are home compostable & 100% bagasse, certified by TÜV AUSTRIA (OK compost HOME); a copy of the certificate is available on request. Food-contact documentation is provided according to the final product specification and production route.

Ekoroll bagasse is produced at a mill that holds these certificates. Copies are shared on request with buyers and auditors.

Built to your specification

Ekoroll is not limited to a fixed catalog. When the product you need does not exist yet, we develop it with custom tooling: new shapes, sizes, volumes and compartment layouts, from concept or existing sample through mold-making, sampling, validation and scaled production.
