A paper takeaway box is a folded paperboard food container with a grease and moisture barrier inside, made for food that leaves the kitchen — delivery, take-away and street food. To buy them in bulk, start from the menu: choose the format for each dish, size it by the portion and the food’s shape, pick the barrier for the food’s grease, moisture and heat, and test the closed box in a delivery bag before you order.
This guide covers the main takeaway box formats and what each one is for, typical sizes, board and coating options, the EU rules that apply, how to test boxes, and what to compare when you source takeaway boxes wholesale from a factory.
Which Takeaway Box for Which Dish?
| Format | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Noodle box (folded pail) | Noodles, rice, pasta, stir-fries | Fold-closure stays shut, no leaks at the base |
| Fold-top box (1 or 2 compartments) | Mixed meals, salads, street food | Flaps lock, compartments keep sauces apart |
| Meal and lunch box | Full portions, rice dishes, catering | Rigidity when carried by one hand |
| Chicken and snack box | Fried chicken, wings, shared snacks | Vents for steam, handle strength |
| Burger, taco and fries boxes | Burgers, wraps, fries, nuggets | Grease resistance, lid fit, crispness |
| Sushi and doner boxes | Sushi sets, doner, wraps | Flat base, window or lid fit |
| Pizza, cake and bakery boxes | Pizza, cakes, pastries | Board strength, venting, stacking |
| Multi-compartment meal box | Mains with sides and sauces | Seal between compartments, lid fit |

What Sizes Do Takeaway Boxes Come In?
Sizes differ by format and by range. The figures below are typical industry sizes, given to plan a range rather than to order from.
| Format | Typical sizes | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Noodle box | about 16 / 26 / 32 oz (≈ 480 / 770 / 950 ml) | Side, regular and large noodle or rice portions |
| Fold-top box, small | about 500–800 ml | Sides, snacks, desserts |
| Fold-top or meal box, medium | about 1,000–1,400 ml | One full meal |
| Fold-top or meal box, large | about 1,800–2,000 ml | Large or sharing portions |
Three rules keep a range simple:
- Two or three sizes per format usually cover a menu; more sizes mean more stock and more mistakes at the pass.
- Size by shape, not only volume. A burger needs height, fries need an open top, and a curry needs depth and a tight closure.
- Leave headspace so the box closes without pressing on the food and sauces stay inside.
Board and Barrier: What Is the Box Made Of?
- Board: kraft (natural brown), white board or bamboo board. Heavier board gives a stiffer box for heavy or wet food; lighter board suits snacks and dry food.
- Barrier: paperboard alone absorbs grease and moisture, so the inside is coated or lined. The main options are a water-based (aqueous) coating, a PLA coating, or a PE / PP lining.
- Grease resistance: fried, oily and saucy food needs a barrier tested for grease; check the outside of the box after the food has waited for its usual time.
How the barrier is treated under EU rules:
- Single-Use Plastics Directive (EU) 2019/904. Food containers for food eaten from the container without further preparation, such as take-away meals, are covered when they are made wholly or partly of plastic. The European Commission’s guidelines treat bio-based and biodegradable plastics such as PLA as plastic too. Member States must reduce consumption of these containers, and extended producer responsibility applies.
- Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40. Since 12 August 2026, food-contact packaging containing PFAS above the set limits may not be placed on the EU market, and from 1 January 2030 packaging must be recyclable. Ask for the PFAS status and the recyclability documentation of the box in writing.
For a comparison with molded fiber, see bagasse vs paper food containers: bagasse food containers are 100% fiber with no coating and suit hot, wet dishes held for longer.
How to Test Takeaway Boxes Before a Bulk Order
- Delivery run: pack your hottest, wettest and oiliest dishes, close the boxes, put them in a delivery bag with drinks and other items, and carry them for a typical trip.
- Leaks and grease: check the base and corners for leaks and the outside for grease marks after the food has waited.
- Steam and crispness: check that vented boxes keep fried food crisp and that closed boxes do not collapse with steam.
- Closure: open and close the box several times; a fold-top should lock without tearing.
- Speed at the pass: time how long staff need to fold, fill and close each box at a busy hour.
- Storage: check how flat-packed boxes stack and how much space a carton takes.
Buying Takeaway Boxes Wholesale: What to Compare
When you compare factories and wholesalers, compare the full specification, not only the unit:
- Board type and weight, and the box’s dimensions.
- Barrier type (water-based, PLA, PE/PP) in writing, and the PFAS status.
- Declaration of compliance for food contact under Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004.
- Print: number of colors, inside or outside, and how the proof is approved.
- Packing: units per sleeve and per carton, carton size and weight, and pallet configuration.
- Range: whether the same supplier can cover the other boxes, bowls, cups and cutlery on your menu, so print and quality stay consistent.
- Lead time and minimum order: both depend on stock or custom print and are confirmed in the quote.
- Samples: every format and size you plan to order, before the first bulk order.
