The small end of a bagasse range — soup cups, portion cups, drink cups, flat and dome fiber lids, and ice cream cups — is what completes a fiber-based menu once plates, bowls and clamshells are in place. To choose them, match the cup to the food or drink, choose the lid by rim diameter and profile, and test the cup and lid together with your own product. Ekoroll bagasse is home compostable and 100% bagasse, PFAS-free, water- and oil-resistant, and microwave- and freezer-safe.
This guide covers the formats in the family, how cup lids fit, flat and dome lids, hot and cold use, ice cream cups and bowls, EU rules for cups and lids, and what to ask a supplier.
Formats in the Family
| Format | Typical use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Soup cup | Soups, stews, hot sides | Wide, stable cup with a fitted fiber lid |
| Portion cup | Sauces, dips, dressings, tasting portions | Small sizes, often about 2–4 oz (60–120 ml), with lids |
| Drink cup | Selected cold and hot drinks, desserts | Suitability confirmed per drink and holding time |
| Flat lid | Soups, drinks, stacking, delivery | Sip opening on drink lids |
| Dome lid | Foam, cream, toppings, fuller portions | Straw or sip opening |
| Ice cream cup or bowl | Gelato, ice cream, frozen yogurt, desserts | Bowls, tall cups, scalloped and hemispherical shapes |

How Cup Lids Fit
A lid seats properly only on a cup with the same rim diameter, curl profile and taper. Two cups both sold as 8 oz can need two different lids, so the size name on the box is not enough.
- Common rims: paper coffee cups often use around 80 mm for small cups and around 90 mm for medium and large cups. Many ranges build several sizes on one rim so one lid fits them all.
- Test the pair: press the lid on, run a finger round the edge, tip the cup and check the sip opening with your drinks.
- Sample together: order samples of the cup and the lid at the same time, from the ranges you will use.
Our video shows why rim and curl matter more than the size name. For lids for other containers, see molded fiber lids and our complete guide to molded fiber lids; for the material comparison, molded fiber lids vs plastic lids; and for the whole cup-and-lid question, hot paper cups with lids.
Flat or Dome Lid?
- Flat lids stack well, sit low in delivery bags and suit soups and drinks without toppings.
- Dome lids leave room for foam, whipped cream, toppings and fuller portions, often with a straw or sip opening.
Both are molded fiber and matched to the cup diameters in the range.
Hot and Cold Use
Ekoroll bagasse is suitable for hot and cold food, and is microwave- and freezer-safe. For hot drinks, suitability depends on the cup, the lid, the drink, its temperature and the holding time; we confirm it with samples for your use. For hot coffee and tea, a common setup is a paper cup with a bagasse fiber lid; a fully paper-based alternative is our lid-free hot cup.
Ice Cream Cups and Bowls

| Format | Best for |
|---|---|
| Low, wide bowl | Scoops with toppings, eaten at the counter |
| Tall cup | Larger servings and walk-away service |
| Scalloped bowl | A distinctive gelato and dessert presentation |
| Hemispherical bowl | Rounded desserts, frozen yogurt |
Bagasse gives gelato and desserts a natural, premium look on the counter. Ekoroll bagasse is freezer-safe; suitability for your product and holding time is confirmed with samples. For lidded retail packs, our paper range also includes ice cream and yogurt cups with lids.
EU Rules for Cups and Lids
- Single-Use Plastics Directive (EU) 2019/904. Cups for beverages, including their covers and lids, are covered when they are made wholly or partly of plastic: they are subject to consumption-reduction measures and extended producer responsibility, and cups made partly of plastic carry a printed marking. A 100% bagasse lid contains no plastic, so it is not a single-use plastic lid; a paper cup with a plastic lining underneath still counts as a plastic cup. The Commission’s guidelines treat bio-based plastics such as CPLA as plastic.
- Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40. Since 12 August 2026, food-contact packaging containing PFAS above set limits may not be placed on the EU market. Ekoroll bagasse is PFAS-free.
- Food contact. Ask any supplier for a declaration of compliance under Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 for the cup and the lid.
What to Ask a Supplier
- Rim diameter and profile of each lid, and the exact cups it is designed for.
- Cup capacity and whether several sizes share one lid.
- Openings: sip, straw or closed; flat or dome.
- Hot-drink suitability for your drinks and holding time, confirmed with samples.
- Documentation: compostability certificate and holder, PFAS status, food-contact declaration.
- Packing: units per sleeve and carton.
- Lead time and minimum order: confirmed in the quote.
